 Darkside of Sunday

Rudi Stanik became a German POW and worked in the Ruhr coalmines following his capture in the siege of Stalingrad. On their surrender in 1945 he was interrogated by an American, Matthew Johnson and handed back to the Russian Army and thereby sentenced to 10 years hard labour in a Siberian Gulag for assisting the enemy in their war effort.

Commander Jack Sanderson is held in Moscow’s notorious Lubyanka prison on espionage charges before being sentenced to serve time in Siberia. He believes his cover was blown by information given to the Russians by Matthew Johnson.

Rudi and Jack are thrown together in a cattle truck on the train bound for a gulag in the far east of the USSR. Their destination is never reached as fire breaks out and they escape in the chaotic aftermath into a wasteland of snow and ice.

Determined to escape the USSR and with the help of a local girl who Rudi falls in love with they make plans not knowing the deadly consequences and trail of destruction that they provoke from those who seek to stop them. Evil men who will stop at nothing, both in America and London.

 BIOGRAPHY

The criminal mind is challenging . Some clinical psychologists argue that the criminal's way of thinking is vastly different from that of a responsible citizen and refute popular beliefs that broken homes, alcoholism, media violence, unemployment, drug addiction, or passionate impulses are crime causes. Here lies a writer's first set of character puzzles to test one's ingenuity. The second  puzzle is that the lessons from history are never learned, despite our so called human intelligence. Those lessons keep repeating themselves albeit in different generations.  I try to combine both conundrums in an initial idea. Does it excite me? Passion overtakes me when the answer is ‘yes’. The crafting and the challenge of the first draft. Does the story work? Then the really hard work, draft after draft, honing the details.

I born in the north of England but grew up in Devon and went on to University in Cardiff and Bristol College of Law. I have a Law degree and a Diploma in Forensic Science and Profiling. Academically, Criminal Law is a fascinating subject, but its practice never appealed to me. Romantic idealism has no place in court and is only available in fiction whether in film or the written word.

Reading both genres, crime and history, has been my pleasure for many years. I hope you enjoy each book as much as I enjoyed creating them.
